Copenhagen's Charms: 5+ things to do in Copenhagen

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Copenhagen was probably one of my most surprising trips this year. It exceeded my expectations and it was a beautiful city to explore.

This year, my boyfriend and I decided to book each other a surprise trip and to keep it a surprise until we got there! (It was a challenge making him blast music with noise cancellation headphones at the airport and making him look down during check in... etc! I'm surprised that people didn't think I was kidnapping him tbh 🤣).

But hey mission success! 😎

Copenhagen, with its abundance of charm, played the perfect host for our adventure. Every corner held a new discovery, and the city's beauty exceeded my wildest expectations. In this blog, I invite you to join me on a virtual tour through Copenhagen's enchanting streets as I share my top recommendations and the myriad of surprises that make this city an absolute gem.

So, let's dive into the wonders of Copenhagen...and my top reccomendations on things to do there!

1. Explore Nyhavn's Colorful Waterfront:

Nyhavn, the pulsating heart of Copenhagen, beckons with its lively and colorful waterfront. Immerse yourself in the city's maritime history as you discover charming cafes, restaurants, and historic ships lining the canal. Uncover the secrets of Nyhavn, a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Copenhagen experience.

2. Cycle Through the City Like a Local:

Embrace Copenhagen's local lifestyle by renting a bike and exploring the city's flat terrain and extensive cycling lanes. Navigate hidden gems, trendy neighborhoods, and scenic parks at your own pace. This biking adventure offers a unique, immersive experience, allowing you to discover Copenhagen like a true local. I always love exploring new cities at my own pace whether that be on foot, an electric scooter or in this case - cycling!

(P.S. make sure you don't run into someone like I did with my electric bike - those things really don't stop fast enough, learn from my mistakes haha. Thankfully the lady was fine and Danish people are so kind she was the one apologizing to me and asking me if me and my bike are okay)

3. Experience Freetown Christiania:

Dive into the eclectic charm of Freetown Christiania, a self-governing neighborhood boasting a completely unique vibe and bohemian spirit. Explore the vibrant street art, unique architecture, and alternative lifestyle that define this enclave. Freetown Christiania provides an insider's look into Copenhagen's diverse and creative community. When we visited it, there was a free music festival happening there which was pretty cool to see! I would not recommend this area for children.

4. Relax in King's Garden (Kongens Have):

Find serenity in the heart of Copenhagen at King's Garden, surrounding the elegant Rosenborg Castle. Unwind amidst manicured lawns, flowerbeds, and historical charm. This lush oasis is an ideal retreat for a leisurely afternoon, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city.

5. Canal boat tour

There are many canal boat tours to choose from, many of them have the option to have a guide on board that explains the history along the way. However, we ended up embarking on a personalized voyage of discovery, we elevated our Copenhagen canal experience by renting our own boat for a two-hour escapade. Navigating the waterways at our own pace, we enjoyed the freedom to curate our route, exploring hidden corners and iconic landmarks alike. With the wind in our hair and the city's enchanting scenery unfolding before us, the private boat charter added an intimate touch to our adventure, allowing us to savor the beauty of Copenhagen and take in all the views!

6. Visit the Tivoli Gardens:

Elevate your Copenhagen experience with a visit to Tivoli Gardens, the world-famous amusement park blending vintage charm and modern attractions. Delight in thrilling rides, captivating live performances, and the enchanting ambiance that makes Tivoli Gardens a timeless destination for visitors of all ages.

7. Indulge in Danish Cuisine at a Local Market:

Satisfy your culinary cravings at Torvehallerne, Copenhagen's premier food market. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you sample Danish delicacies, including smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches), fresh produce, and a diverse array of international flavors. Torvehallerne is a culinary haven for food enthusiasts seeking a true taste of Copenhagen.

In Copenhagen, my accommodations were split between the captivating Absalon Hotel and the luxurious Manon Les Suites—both highly recommended! Absalon Hotel, a splendid and artsy family-owned gem, boasts a prime location. Meanwhile, Manon Les Suites left an indelible impression with its extraordinary indoor pool (check out this reel). I hope my recommendations inspire your own adventure in Copenhagen. Whether you're drawn to the lively waterfront of Nyhavn, the bohemian spirit of Freetown Christiania, or the timeless magic of Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be unraveled.
